What Causes Snoring

What Causes Snoring

Snore mostly occur when the flow of air from your mouth or nose to your lungs makes the tissues of your throat vibrate when you sleep. This can make a loud, raspy noise. Loud snoring can make it difficult for you and your partner to get a good night’s sleep.

You possibly will not know that you snore. Your partner might notice the snoring and that you sleep with your mouth wide open. If snoring keeps you or your partner from getting a good night’s sleep, one or both of you can feel exhausted throughout the day.

Causes of Snoring

When we are asleep, the area at the back of the throat sometimes narrows. The same amount of air passing through this smaller opening can cause the tissues surrounding the opening to vibrate, which in turn can cause the sounds of snoring.

Is Snoring Hereditary?

Unfortunately, the answer is yes, you can. According to a research study published in the journal “Chest”, children that have at least one parent that snored were three times more likely to snore themselves when compared to children whose parents had no snoring problem. The study was undertaken in order to more accurately determine the inheritance of snoring due to the fact that snoring is “the primary symptom of sleep-disordered breathing”.

How Common is Snoring?

Snoring is very common. Mainly adults, probably 90 percent of adults, have snored at one point in their life or the other. It’s more usual in men than women: Probably about 50 percent of men are affected by snoring compared to about 25 percent of women. Snoring is more prominent in patients who are overweight, who drink alcohol or take sedatives. Snoring can also be prominent in patients who have allergies or nasal obstruction.
