Gingivitis — an inflammation of the gums — is the initial stage of gum disease and the easiest to treat. The direct cause of gingivitis is plaque – the soft, sticky, colorless film of bacteria that forms constantly on the teeth and gums. Gum disease is also known as periodontal disease. As gingivitis is usually very mild; many people may have it and not know. Gingivitis should be treated, because it can progress into serious gum disease.
If your gums are red instead of pink, inflamed, swollen and bleed when they brush their teeth, they most likely have gingivitis. Gingivitis is mainly caused by inadequate oral hygiene – not brushing your teeth enough or properly, and not flossing. Plaque, a sticky substance made up of bacteria builds up in the teeth. The bacteria release toxins that irritate the gums. One of the primary factors contributing to gingivitis is plaque buildup, a sticky colorless deposit of bacteria that regularly forms on teeth. These bacteria build up and can create byproducts that can damage the gums.

* Hormonal changes, especially those caused by pregnancy, puberty and menopause
* Bad oral habits, especially smoking
* Certain medications that reduce the saliva in the mouth
* Poor nutrition
* Viral and fungal infection
* Certain diseases, like diabetes, cancer, and HIV
* Use of contraceptive pills
Spontaneous gum bleeding and other systemic hemorrhages may occur in agranulocytosis, which typically causes progressive fatigue and weakness, followed by signs of infection, such as a fever and chills. Inspection may reveal oral and perianal lesions, which are usually rough edged with a gray or black membrane.
