Head Lice

Head Lice/Head Lice Information

The head lice is a tiny, wingless bloodsucking insect that lives amongst human hairs and feeds on exceedingly small amounts of blood drawn from the scalp. Head lice infection is very regular. It has been estimated that up to one in every 10 children in school acquires head lice at some time.

Risk for getting head lice

Any person who comes in close contact with someone who already has head lice, or even their infected clothing and other belongings, is at risk for acquiring head lice.

Signs of Head Lice

Lice eggs. These look like tiny yellow, tan, or brown dots before they hatch. After hatching, the left behind shell looks white or clear. Lice lay nits on hair shafts close to the skin’s surface, wherever the temperature is just right for keeping warm until they hatch. Nits look sort of like dandruff, only they can’t be removed by brushing or shaking them off. Except the infestation is heavy, it’s more usual to see nits in a child’s hair than it

is to see live lice crawling on the scalp. Lice eggs hatch within 1 to 2 weeks after they’re laid.
